History of DKO



The Konde Diocese is one of the 28 dioceses of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT), located in the Southern Highlands in the Mbeya and Songwe regions, and serving over 125,000 members. It was founded the 18th century as part of missionary efforts in the region. The Diocese is a long standing history of providing spiritual and social services. Its headquarters in Tukuyu, within the Rungwe District, of the Mbeya region.
The Diocese was registered on 26 September 2000 under the Societies Act of 1954, and operates under Act No. 375 of the Trustees and the Tanganyika Incorporation Act of 1971, as amended in 2002. It is a member of the Christian Council of Tanzania (CCT) and in Mbeya and Songwe regions, including the districts of Kyela, Rungwe, Mbeya City, Mbeya Rural, Mbozi, Ileje, and Songwe (Ifwenkenya area).
Administratively, the Diocese is led by a Bishop, assisted by the Assistant to the Bishop who responsible for pastoral matters and the Secretary General administrative services. The Secretary General two deputies: one for Finance, Planning, and Development, and the other is responsible for Christian Education and Social Services. The former oversees the Finance and Planning and Development Departments, while the latter oversees the Women and Children, Health Services, and Christian Education and Youth Affairs Departments.
Currently, the Konde Diocese comprises of 8 Dioceses and about 115 congregations.
